🇺🇦 Ukraine [needs our help](https://zverok.space/blog/2022-03-03-WAR.html) – more on this below.

[DHH and RailsConf Go Their Separate Ways (and Some Rails Core Members Step Back)](https://thenewstack.io/railsconf-and-dhh-go-their-separate-ways/) — This is a complicated story but _The New Stack_ attempts to tie some delicate threads together here. DHH, the original creator of Rails, wrote a post called _[No RailsConf](https://world.hey.com/dhh/no-railsconf-faa7935e)_ summing up various Rails developments in 2021, before taking umbrage with a decision to not grant him the full main keynote session at RailsConf (as well as the [removal of the 'web3' track](https://twitter.com/railsconf/status/1489311414237884419)). Unsurprisingly this has kicked off a lot of [conversations](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30600192) [in the community,](https://www.reddit.com/r/rails/comments/t5u3fe/dhh_is_cancelled_from_railsconf_wont_give_keynote/) and as a consequence, [some](https://twitter.com/javan/status/1501198022201548800) [core](https://github.com/rails/website/pull/27) [team](https://github.com/rails/website/pull/25#issuecomment-1062650355) members have stepped back or resigned.

[Bridgetown 1.0: A Modern Ruby (JAMstack) Web Framework](https://www.bridgetownrb.com/) — Bridgetown is a Ruby-based static-site generator ‘grown on the fertile soil of Rails and Jekyll’. It comes with a lot out of the box and offers much flexibility whether through template engines, components, plugins, or its zero-config build system if you want to go heavy on the JS. [GitHub repo here](https://github.com/bridgetownrb/bridgetown). If you want to hear more about this release, the project’s creator was on [last week’s _Remote Ruby_ podcast](https://share.transistor.fm/s/a3b34bea).

[🇺🇦 A Rubyist in Ukraine Appeals to the Ruby Community](https://zverok.space/blog/2022-03-03-WAR.html) — Did you know the popular [Ruby Changes](https://rubyreferences.github.io/rubychanges/) (a.k.a. Ruby Changelog) project is maintained by a Ukrainian Rubyist? He has a message to share about the invasion and how you can help by showing support, whether by words or actions. We have donated and will continue to do so. In related news, GitHub has also shared [its response to the war](https://github.blog/2022-03-02-our-response-to-the-war-in-ukraine/).

[On Abstraction in Rails](https://www.codewithjason.com/abstraction-in-rails/) — There’s nothing that can’t be fixed by another level of abstraction, right? Jason cooks up this look at making better abstractions in Rails by picking on a couple of ‘anti-examples’ in public codebases.

[Rails 7.0.2.3, 6.1.4.7, 6.0.4.7, and 5.2.6.3 Released](https://rubyonrails.org/2022/3/8/Rails-7-0-2-3-6-1-4-7-6-0-4-7-and-5-2-6-3-have-been-released) — As you can probably tell by the cumbersome version numbers, these are small security releases. They fix [a possible code injection vulnerability](https://discuss.rubyonrails.org/t/cve-2022-21831-possible-code-injection-vulnerability-in-rails-active-storage/80199) with Active Storage if you are using `image_processing` and `mini_magick`.

**IN BRIEF:**

- TIL that Shopify has over 170,000 tests in its core monolith app meaning that [work on prioritizing the order of executed tests](https://shopify.engineering/test-budget-time-constrained-ci-feedback) becomes quite important.
- Aaron (Tenderlove) Patterson has [a rather interesting use](https://twitter.com/tenderlove/status/1501727883202494464) for GitHub's image hosting features.
- [RubyGems 3.3.9](https://blog.rubygems.org/2022/03/09/3.3.9-released.html) has been released. Gift Egwuenu also has [the latest monthly update](https://blog.rubygems.org/2022/03/07/february-rubygems-updates.html) on the RubyGems project.
- The latest early access version of the RubyMine 2022.1 IDE [is now available.](https://blog.jetbrains.com/ruby/2022/03/rubymine-2022-1-eap4/)
- [Surma](https://surma.dev/), perhaps best known for his work in the WebAssembly and Web Workers spaces, has fixed a bug in Shopify's Rails OAuth implementation [and was pleasantly surprised](https://twitter.com/DasSurma/status/1498392873250795524) by the experience as a newcomer to Rails.
- The [latest alpha of Hanami 2.0](https://hanamirb.org/blog/2022/03/08/announcing-hanami-200alpha7/) is out now.

The fix involved Rubocop and Shopify’s [Deprecation Toolkit](https://github.com/shopify/deprecation_toolkit).

💡**Tip of the Week**

## The Rails console's sandbox mode

No tip from Jemma this week. However, I was on Twitter and Shino Kouda of [BootRails](https://www.bootrails.com/) mentioned a Rails feature I hadn't encountered before!

If you run `rails console` with the `--sandbox` flag, a transaction envelopes your session so that any database changes can be rolled back at the end – [check out Shino's full tweet.](https://twitter.com/ShinoKouda/status/1501498780939653120)

Beware that other side effects may occur separate to the transaction, however – such as the creation of background jobs. Thanks for the heads up, Shino!
