[Rails World 2024 Recap: All Talks Now Online](https://rubyonrails.org/2024/10/15/rails-world-2024-recap) — _Rails World_ was a resounding success (save for a fire alarm that woke everyone up at 2am, we hear!) and while it’s great to hear what a good time everyone had, it’s even better to [finally get to enjoy all the great talks](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx) for ourselves. I’ve been watching for hours and point out some highlights below.

**✨ SOME TALK HIGHLIGHTS:**

- My top highlight was Stephen Margheim's well delivered talk on [using SQLite with Rails](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l56IBad-5aQ&list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&index=19) and how SQLite's strengths play well with the 'one person framework' idea DHH has been pushing. More on this in our next issue.
- [Aaron Patterson's closing keynote](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE6F3drGhA8&list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&index=2) covered a grab bag of things before focusing [26 minutes in](https://youtu.be/ZE6F3drGhA8?list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&t=1550) on efforts being made to speed up Rails' router.
- Eileen Uchitelle went higher level to talk about [modular monoliths and app structure](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olxoNDBp6Rg&list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&index=3) and Shopify's mixed experience with modularity.
- 🤖 Obie Fernandez continued to beat the drum for [Ruby and Rails' role in implementing modern AI solutions.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB034Dt4tE0&list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&index=26)
- Jenny Shen came loaded with [tips and ideas on getting apps upgraded to Rails 8.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJy7c27Xx5k&list=PLHFP2OPUpCeb182aDN5cKZTuyjn3Tdbqx&index=20)
- [DHH's opening keynote](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cEn_83zRFw) and the [DHH, Matz and Tobi 'Fireside Chat'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPBbHu-BKpQ) – both mentioned in previous issues. 🙈 [CRuby's Monkey Patch Detection](https://tenderlovemaking.com/2024/10/16/monkey-patch-detection-in-ruby/) — CRuby includes many optimizations to allow core classes representing essential concepts like numbers, arrays, and strings to operate as quickly as possible. If a core class is monkey patched, however, these optimizations might need to be dropped, but how does Ruby detect this and ‘de-optimize’ itself?

Aaron Patterson

[Leveraging Falcon and Rails for Real-Time Interactivity](https://www.codeotaku.com/journal/2024-09/interactive-rails/index) — A thoroughly educational history of the [Async](https://github.com/socketry/async) gem, its influence on Rack 3, real-time interactivity in Rails, and how the integration of Async 2, Rack 3, Falcon, and Rails _‘provides a powerful foundation for building highly interactive and scalable web applications.’_

Samuel Williams

**IN BRIEF:**

- Over the years, Ruby has come with many libraries (as part of the 'standard library'), some of which have then been turned into gems and are now included as default gems or bundled gems instead. [StdGems.org](https://stdgems.org/) is a site that shows us what the current default and bundled gems are.
- [Rails 6.1.7.9, 7.0.8.5, 7.1.4.1 and 7.2.1.1 have been released](https://rubyonrails.org/2024/10/15/Rails-Versions-7-0-8-5-7-1-4-1-and-7-2-1-1-have-been-released) fixing four potential regex-based denial of service vulnerabilities on Ruby versions _below_ Ruby 3.2.
- Talking of Rails updates, [Rails has a new official maintenance policy.](https://rubyonrails.org/2024/10/15/new-maintenance-policy-and-eol-annouments) In short, Rails 7.2 is good for bug fixes till August 2026, they aim to do a feature release every six months, and Rails 7.0 will no longer get bug fix updates from next month.
- [UsingRails](https://usingrails.com/) is a directory of over 2000 organizations that are using Ruby and Rails in some way.

[RubyGems.org Gets a New Design](https://blog.rubygems.org/2024/10/15/our-new-design.html) — A new design is gradually rolling out to improve support for a wider range of devices, as well as adding a much-needed ‘dark mode.’ You’re encouraged to help review the update and report any usability issues.

[Wikidata is a Giant Crosswalk File](https://www.dbreunig.com/2024/10/04/wikidata-is-a-giant-crosswalk-file.html) — [Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page) is the Wikipedia of structured data. Here we see how to use DuckDB and Ruby to create ‘crosswalks’ from Wikidata to map identifiers in the data to third party services. Neat to see an example of using [Ractors](https://ruby-doc.org/core-3.0.2/Ractor.html) in a blog post, too.
