[json v2.8: Ruby's JSON Implementation Gets Faster](https://github.com/ruby/json/releases/tag/v2.8.0) — Ruby’s [json](https://ruby.github.io/json/) is depended on by (almost) everything so updates like this have far reaching implications. v2.8 includes significant performance improvements (up to 1.7x faster on real world documents) and support for optionally parsing trailing commas.

🙏 My brain works in odd ways, but this update reminded me of my friend, [the late Rubyist Jason Seifer](https://www.greggpollack.com/remembering-jason-seifer/), who we lost seven years ago. Gone but never forgotten, not least for his role in playing _DJ Ango_ in a classic [▶️ Rails vs Django bit.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb1YVZWt0OE)

[Ruby 3.3.6 Released](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2024/11/05/ruby-3-3-6-released/) — Don’t get _too_ excited, it’s a scheduled minor bug fix release and removes some default gem warnings. Nonetheless, it’s a straightforward upgrade for Ruby 3.3 and the last one of 2024 as v3.3.7 is expected on January 7.

[What is Rack?](https://younes.codes/posts/what-is-rack) — An in-depth journey through Rack, the protocol that makes Sinatra sing and Rails run, starting from scratch by creating a Rack-compliant app before using the conveniences of the Rack gem. A good look under the hood.

**IN BRIEF:**

- Peter Zhu has [posted a ticket to Ruby's issue tracker](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/20860) about upstreaming a framework (MMTk) that provides a variety of garbage collector implementations as an experimental feature into Ruby.
- Ruby's long-time simple HTTP server _WEBrick_ has [a new version v1.9.0](https://github.com/ruby/webrick/releases/tag/v1.9.0) with RBS files included and a stronger note that it _"should not be used in production."_
- Rails is going to [set a default regex timeout of 1 second](https://github.com/rails/rails/pull/53490) to help mitigate against so called '[ReDoS](https://owasp.org/www-community/attacks/Regular_expression_Denial_of_Service_-_ReDoS)' regular expression denials of service.

🌸 [Hanami 2.2: Persistence Pays Off](https://hanamirb.org/blog/2024/11/05/hanami-220/) — A major release for the popular, alternative framework for building Ruby webapps. v2.2 adds a new and improved database layer, shown off well in this post. The new version represents the team’s complete vision for Hanami, so give it a test drive.

[When it Comes to Weird Lexical Syntax, Ruby Wins?](https://justine.lol/lex/) — When an experienced programmer goes on a tour of 42 languages while building a syntax highlighter, some fun insights pop up with, amusingly, Ruby getting a special mention: _“Now here’s a language whose syntax evades all attempts at understanding.”_

[Pagy 9.2: The Popular Pagination Gem](https://ddnexus.github.io/pagy/) — It’s been around for years and still claims to be _“the best pagination gem”_ – who are we to argue? [v9.2.0](https://github.com/ddnexus/pagy/releases/tag/9.2.0) makes v9’s [keyset pagination approach](https://ddnexus.github.io/pagy/docs/api/keyset/) even more ‘wicked fast’ and adds more apps to [its playground](https://ddnexus.github.io/pagy/playground/) to play with and get started fast.
