[Brut: A New Web Framework for Ruby](https://naildrivin5.com/blog/2025/07/08/brut-a-new-web-framework-for-ruby.html) — With no controllers, no verbs, no resources, and an HTML-first, ‘low-ceremony’ approach [Brut](https://brutrb.com/) is treading its own path. [Here’s a broader conceptual overview](https://brutrb.com/overview.html) of what it’s about; I think it makes some fantastic choices and David has clearly put a lot of effort into it. _(Be aware of the [atypical licensing](https://github.com/thirdtank/brut/blob/main/LICENSE.txt), though.)_

David Bryant Copeland

[Async Ruby is the Future of AI Apps (And It's Already Here)](https://paolino.me/async-ruby-is-the-future/) — After years in Python’s async ecosystem, Carmine found Ruby’s approach to concurrency dated at first, before discovering the beauty of fiber-based concurrency and its advantages for AI integration use cases and I/O-bound workloads in general — without big Python-style async rewrites.

Carmine Paolino [![\](https://res.cloudinary.com/cpress/image/upload/c_limit,w_480,h_480,q_auto/copm/87ebcf90.jpg)](https://link.testdouble.com/a27918)

[Refactor vs. Rewrite is a False Dichotomy](https://link.testdouble.com/a27918) — Choose a different path: test driven modernization. Remediation is a chance to let go of what you don’t need, and reduce both costs and risk. Right-size subsystem design with seam-based modernization. Modernize with minimal downtime and defects.

**IN BRIEF:**

- [A denial of service vulnerability has been found](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2025/07/08/dos-resolv-cve-2025-24294/) in Ruby's bundled `resolv` gem (used for DNS resolution). Luckily you can _resolve_ it by upgrading your `resolv`gem.
- [Some vulnerabilities have been discovered in `git` too](https://github.blog/open-source/git/git-security-vulnerabilities-announced-6/) and you're recommended to upgrade that as well.
- Active Record is adding a way to [mark associations as 'deprecated'](https://github.com/rails/rails/pull/55285) so you get warnings when you try to use them.
- 🇺🇸 [San Francisco Ruby Conference](https://sfruby.com/) is taking place this November 19-20 with a [great lineup of speakers so far](https://sfruby.com/speakers/). [The CFP is open](https://cfp.sfruby.com/) for a few more days, if you want to speak.

Sharon shows off some of the benefits here and some initial Ruby apps that are using it.

🎁 Goodies from elsewhere

In my endless crawling of the Internet, I'm always coming across neat stuff that doesn't directly fit into the newsletter, but that I'd like to share anyway. Here are some of the most recent ones:

- **Caching:** PlanetScale has shared [a neat interactive article about caching](https://planetscale.com/blog/caching) that visually demonstrates the benefits of caching from several different angles, including at the CPU level.
- **Animated SVGs:** Did you know [you can generate efficient SVGs that feel like GIFs](https://koaning.io/posts/svg-gifs/) and even use them in your GitHub README.md files?
- **CGI redux:** I used to run some basic Ruby apps using CGI 10+ years ago (_Ruby Weekly_'s subscription process was a CGI script!) so it's neat to see people [considering the potential of running apps with CGI in 2025.](https://jacob.gold/posts/serving-200-million-requests-with-cgi-bin/) The performance of modern CPUs and quick process spawning times makes it possible to use CGI at serious scale, _if you really needed to._
- **IP certificates:** [Let's Encrypt has just issued its first _IP address_ certificate.](https://letsencrypt.org/2025/07/01/issuing-our-first-ip-address-certificate/) This feature will be more broadly rolled out over the year. Two catches are that the certificates only last for six days and they don't support DNS challenges for hopefully obvious reasons ;-)
- **Fixing wonky JSON:** [jsonrepair](https://github.com/josdejong/jsonrepair) is a Node.js library, CLI tool, and [basic online tool](https://josdejong.github.io/jsonrepair/) for fixing up invalid JSON documents so they'll at least parse.
- **Egress pricing:** [A comparison of data egress costs](https://getdeploying.com/reference/data-egress) from about 40 popular providers and cloud services, including Vercel, AWS, Fly and Linode.
- **Landing pages:** The folks at Evil Martians have taken [a look at 100 different devtool landing pages](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/we-studied-100-devtool-landing-pages-here-is-what-actually-works-in-2025) to see what really works in 2025.
