[What's New in Ruby 4.0](https://nithinbekal.com/posts/ruby-4-0/) — It’s exactly a week till Ruby 4.0 is expected to land (on Christmas Day!) and while the official release notes will be the eventual ‘go to’ for discovering everything that’s new, Nithin has done a good job of rounding up the headline changes here.

[Ruby 4.0.0 Preview 3 Released](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2025/12/18/ruby-4-0-0-preview3-released/) — Can't wait for Christmas Day to unwrap 4.0? The latest preview is out along with a thorough set of notes on what’s new. There are [hundreds of minor changes since preview 2](https://github.com/ruby/ruby/compare/v4.0.0-preview2...v4.0.0-preview3), but notably `bundle gem` now [has an `--ext=go` option](https://github.com/ruby/ruby/commit/4423facbffd5bd523541ebf42dc274272b1de732#diff-30c32f007686dfeb5dbbafb5be6225f7f3823eb563ae33ca44ebe9fcef9c7cd4) to scaffold a native extension in Go (using [go-gem-wrapper](https://github.com/ruby-go-gem/go-gem-wrapper)).

🏆 The Top 5 Ruby Videos of 2025

As judged by reader engagement across the year – not purely by views!

▶1. [Why to Use Jupyter Notebooks with Ruby](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c5-VEx4Wgw) — There have been a few attempts at bringing ‘notebook’ style programming, commonly associated with Python, to Ruby (e.g. [IRuby](https://github.com/SciRuby/iruby?tab=readme-ov-file)) but Landon does a good job of explaining the _why_ and the benefits here.

Landon Gray

▶2. [How To Build Basic Desktop Applications in Ruby](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTSqRdTVtDY) — Technically a 2024 talk, but one we first linked to this year, by the creator of the [Glimmer](https://github.com/AndyObtiva/glimmer) suite of Ruby DSL-driven desktop and Web app building frameworks.

Andy Maleh

▶3. [An Introduction to Functional Ruby](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-qSi5Utgz8) — A 20-minute talk from this year’s _Functional Conf_ that explores Ruby from a functional programming perspective.

Keith Bennett

▶4. [Rails 8 Unpacked: Inside the Default `Dockerfile`](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j80I0yyx0w4) — A 10-minute explainer.

typecraft

▶5. [An Interview with Yukihiro 'Matz' Matsumoto](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwDJ6zmuI_w) — Ruby’s creator Matz was interviewed about Ruby, his work-life balance, and experiences being a father. It’s not highly technical, but a good interview if you want to get a more rounded view of Matz and how he’s thinking about Ruby’s future.

**Want more? [rubyevents.org](https://www.rubyevents.org/) is exactly what you need.** It's an index covering over 8,000 talks from almost 700 events; many of them with videos. Luckily, there's a search feature, too, so you can just look for [videos about Ractors](https://www.rubyevents.org/talks?s=ractors) or [fibers](https://www.rubyevents.org/talks?s=fibers), say.

🎄 This is the final issue of the year - in theory. We _might_ drop a random issue to celebrate the Ruby 4.0 launch, but our next _scheduled_ issue is on Thursday, January 8. If we don't see you again before then, we hope you have a happy holiday season!
