[Ruby 2D 1.0: SDL3, WebAssembly, and a Comeback Story](https://www.ruby2d.com/) — After three years dormant, Tom Black's _"`Square.new`-and-it-appears"_ graphics gem gets a rewrite with SDL3-powered GPU rendering and the ability to compile experiences to WebAssembly ([live examples](https://www.ruby2d.com/examples)). 😅 I tested it out by making a little _Mario Paint_-inspired paint app _(above)_ and I learnt I can't draw the Ruby logo at all! [![\](https://res.cloudinary.com/cpress/image/upload/c_limit,w_480,h_480,q_auto/copm/820c7ad6.png)](https://go.fastruby.io/tqd)

[🚨 We Audited 137 Rails Apps. 98% Had a Critical KEV](https://go.fastruby.io/tqd) — Rails 7.2 went EOL this week, so it's a good time to look at what’s running in production. We map your images, runtimes, and K8s workloads against CISA's KEV catalog and write the verdicts up as VEX.

[`json` 3.0.0 RC1 Released for Testing](https://github.com/ruby/json/releases/tag/v3.0.0.rc1) — A big, intentionally breaking release of Ruby's default JSON gem that [Jean wants you to test](https://bsky.app/profile/byroot.bsky.social/post/3mss6h2p3vk22) before its release next month. `create_additions` is gone, so `JSON.load` and `JSON.dump` are safe by default, but beware that unknown options now _raise_ instead of being ignored.

Jean Boussier

💡 Jean has also _just_ dropped [Speeding Up (small) Ruby Hashes](https://byroot.github.io/ruby/performance/2026/08/13/speeding-up-ruby-hashes.html).

**⚡️ IN BRIEF:**

- 👀 [Lucas Dohmen has announced _Amiko_](https://lucas.dohmen.io/posts/2026/08/09/rails-is-done/), a community-run fork of Rails 8, arguing Rails' core has changed little since 6.0 and that DHH's view of the world is incompatible with his own. [Ryan Bigg is unconvinced](https://ryanbigg.com/2026/08/amiko-a-desperate-virtue-signalling-attempt) by the idea and thinks [Hanami](https://hanakai.org/hanami) is the way forward.
- Matz has proposed [letting `String#tr` accept character replacement options in a hash style](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22238).
- As of August 9, Rails 7.2 no longer (officially) gets security support, and Rails 8.0 reaches a similar end on November 7. [More details here](https://rubyonrails.org/maintenance).
- 🇨🇿 [Euruko 2026](https://2026.euruko.org/) is taking place next month (September 17-18) in Brno, Czechia, with [speakers](https://2026.euruko.org/#speakers) including Matz, Koichi Sasada, Hitoshi Hasumi (the creator of [PicoRuby](https://github.com/picoruby/picoruby)), Charles Oliver Nutter, and Benoît Daloze.
- 🇺🇸 Matz is keeping busy next month as he's also [going to be at _Rails World 2026_](https://rubyonrails.org/2026/8/7/rails-world-2026-matz-agenda) doing a fireside chat with DHH. [The event's full agenda](https://rubyonrails.org/world/2026/agenda) is now up too.
