Front End Lead Developer

Careers > Front End Lead Developer

Workarea is an enterprise-grade open source ecommerce platform powering sites like The Bouqs, The Reformation, Lonely Planet, and many more. We’re seeking a developer to help shape the front end. You’ll be on the team managing our base open source platform as well as our commercial Commerce Cloud plugins.

The Job

You’re responsible for bringing front end expertise to the core product team. There will be plenty of fresh features, you’ll contribute to high-level platform decision making, bug fixing, and supporting the community. We’re always interested in finding the simpler way, the creative way out. We like to figure out what the problem really is, and we’re here to do great work. You’ll contribute to the team and the team will contribute to you.

You will:

  • Build front end heavy Workarea features
  • Guide front end technical decision making
  • Review front end code
  • Assist in UX and roadmap discussions
  • Assist with lighter-weight back end features
  • Support and grow an open source community

What you bring to the table

We’re looking for someone to bring strong front end skills to our team. If you have broad experience in the front end technical landscape, it'll be helpful. We want your thoughts and leadership. We don’t care about the college degree you may or may not have. We’re more interested in what you’ve done, what you’ve built, and solid software-making fundamentals.

If you’re interested in working remotely, you should be comfortable and have experience doing that. You’re also welcome to join us in our Philadelphia office if that suits you. Some of the team you’ll be working with is remote and some of us prefer the office.

New hires are a great opportunity for diversification. We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. We like people with lots of personality.

Your qualities:
  • Leadership experience with a teacher mentality
  • Experience with pre and post ES6 JavaScript
  • Experience in writing maintainable CSS for large-scale applications
  • Proficiency in Ruby/Rails
  • Comfortable with design of different kinds (code, visual, process)
  • Self-motivated, comfortable managing priorities
  • Will challenge ideas and are comfortable having your ideas challenged

It would be helpful if you had:
  • Experience with retail ecommerce
  • Experience with alternate databases like MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis
  • Comfort writing documentation
  • Enthusiasm for building an open-source community
  • Spent time in large codebases
We’d love to see examples of your work. Feel free to include a cover letter, blog posts, code samples, etc.
